Governor Newsom Convenes a Special Session of the Legislature to Protect California Values Starting on December 2

a. Focused on approving funding for the Department of Justice and other state agencies to immediately file affirmative litigation.

b. The expected costs are upwards of $100 million dollars.

c. The projected litigation will focus on civil rights, reproductive freedoms, climate action, and immigrant families, specifically DACA and withhold federal disaster response funding.

d. No official proposal has been provided.

e. Health Care: The state anticipates that the Trump administration could restrict mifepristone, one of the medications used to induce abortion. Drastic cuts to Medi
Care funding.

f. Finally, the session will allow legislators to make conforming changes to existing law, consistent with litigation needs.

g. Democratic leaders and budget committee chairpersons in both houses support Newsom.

h. Assembly Republican leader James Gallagher, “There will not be a single policy implemented in this special session that could not be addressed when the Legislature reconvenes in January.

i. New York and Illinois have stated that they will fight President Trump.
